Driving Question
How do I entice investors into a start-up business in Davis, California?
Project Information and Considerations Before Voting
No longer are the students asked to cost the business out and develop and investment pitch due to the difficulties of distance learning. Please do not judge them down for not having this information. Welcome to Da Vinci Charter Academy’s first ever Dinos’ Nest Business venture competition. As some of you may know or recognize, this school project was historically titled Dragons’ Den and is based upon the same premise of creating a viable business opportunity in Davis, California. Due to recent societal developments, many traditions and legacies have taken on new looks and approaches, and school projects have had to adapt to new environments and settings. The Political Studies team brainstormed ways to keep this signature event for the Class of 2020 alive despite the interruption in development and the social distancing guidelines.
Originally, on April 3rd the Dragons’ Den Nighttime Event was suppose to unveil 15 new business ideas for the greater Davis Area. Real world business owners, industry professionals, the DV Community, Staff, School Board Members, and more were scheduled to attend and hear the exciting pitches of various investment opportunities. As the Pandemic developed, events were cancelled, schools were closed, and life was put on pause.
Over the next month, the Political Studies team worked to salvage the business ideas and market research that students had poured themselves into up until the shutdown. In this project redesign, Dragons’ Den was rebranded, took on a new trajectory of business development, and Dinos’ Nest was born. Now students are taking those business ideas and have turned them into a Webpage designed sales pitch. The teams are seeking your vote to be the most viable and exciting new business idea to operate in Davis.
The Class of 2020 and the Political Studies Team is hoping for you to take some time and browse the Dino Nest Website to vote for your favorite new idea. We want you to view each Webpage that houses every student team’s business concept. When you get to their pages, you will see exciting ads, creative business ideas, market research about the industry and customer base, all while using persuasive tactics in efforts to convince investors and Davis residents to vote for them.
The Website goes live on Tuesday May 26th, and with it ballots will be disseminated to the DV Community and its Supportive partners. Voting will be open for two weeks to give everyone ample time to browse the website and view each and every business before casting a vote. Voters can only vote once, so please be careful that the vote that is made is what was intended. Voting will close on Monday June 8th @ 3pm PST.
All ballots will be collected via a Google Form, which will be emailed to all original attendees of Dragons’ Den. Additionally, the ballot will be made public on the our DV Website and school platforms. Please take the time to appreciate the high quality student work and creative ideas. When voting, please also consider that these business ideas were created before the pandemic caused the disruption. DO NOT JUDGE the business on whether or not it could survive in the new business operating environment. The Political Studies team is liberating you to to pretend like it never happened, and vote like all of these ideas would not have the challenges current businesses are encountering. There is also a small competition for the best commercial that a few teams created during virtual collaboration, it is amazing what these exceptional students can do despite the challenges and distance between them. Some of the commercials brought in a little connection to current events, but again don’t hold it against the the business concept overall.
If you have any questions, or would like to know more, please reach out to the Political Studies Team.
Happy Voting!
Sincerely,
The Political Studies Team
